(For most of my artistic journey I have believed that one goal of artists is to reinvigorate the mundane, to shed new light on blurred experiences and breathe some kind of aesthetic joy into the everyday. Taking transit, in an attempt to reach a teleological destination, can become quite a monotonous task- especially in a city as large as Berlin. The physical loop of the transit system becomes at once both a mental loop and spiritual one, as well. The same images, sounds, smells and actions satiate its passengers into a seemingly trance-like state. This piece is an explorative attempt to break the pattern and to imbue a mundane trip into an actively musical one. Safe travels (and wear a mask)).
S-Bahn Tracks (Music To Look Out The Window To)
is a geolocated sound"walk", structured around and composed with the Echoes app and for Zone A of Berlin's S-Bahn train system. Each stop on the map has been imbued and encoded with a given note, through help of the app. As the listening passenger moves through the various geo-locational zones, they trigger various notes and thus form a site specific melody for each individual listener.
The impetus behind this piece lies in a desire to rejuvenate the transitory act; an act that is a household name in most Berliners' day to day routines. How can we imbue mundane activity with a newfound sense of wonder and curiosity? How can we see a new angle of the mundane, to rejuvenate our day to day experiences?
On this map there are 48 different stops, with a large factorial outcome- depending on where the listening passenger is heading.
