Ben Glas

"(Music) For A Time And Space" provides a site-specific sonic experience. The work is a relativistic sound composition based on measurements taken at the Variform Gallery, with three sources producing sound waves that interact with the space, creating various subjective tonal interactions for the audience. 

The work questions the friction-based boundaries between listener and composer, authority and subject. Each participant is prone to have their own experience, and paradoxically compose the perception of all persons in the space at Variform.

"Mundada (Stranger Composition)" is an interactive installation worn around the neck of Michael Reinsch. Participants are encouraged to interact with Michael Reinsch and to share both an experience and ephemeral performative moment.

Albatross is a gallery consisting of a 3”x 4” (or 4”x 3”) plastic sleeve on a black lanyard. The front side will hold an original piece of art and the backside will contain information such as an artist bio, title, and price. Michael Reinsch will be wearing the gallery at art openings such as first Thursday and everyday through the duration of an exhibition. Artists can choose to show one piece throughout the entire month or up to 31 images depending on the length of the month.

"Sounds et al presents "Apperceptive Moment". Sound artists Ben Glas, Dolphin Midwives, Samson Stilwell and Amenta Abioto mix sound, visuals and movement into a cohesive exploration of the senses. The experimental performance will engage with acoustics, psychoacoustics, physical interaction with sound, movement, music and noise, to lead the audience on a journey through time and space.

Ben Glas is an interdisciplinary artist and composer based in Portland, OR. With a keen focus on sonic phenomena and vibration, his work engages concepts of relativity, spacetime and egalitarian modes of experiencing sound.

Dolphin Midwives – Ecstatic noise harp ritual experiments by harpist/sound artist/composer Sage Elaine Fisher.

Samson Stilwell works with sound and language to create art within a lyric tradition. His work often lives within the borders, or between spaces, of language and sound, music and noise, thought space and meat space. His debut release, Signals was released on Sounds et al in 2017.

Songwriter, songstress, and actor, Amenta Abioto is on the cutting edge of all that is musical, theatrical, and literary. Her music is boldly mystical and soul-fired, and her raw live performances invoke elements of both theatrical surprise and magic through ancient African diasporic sounds and stories."

Experience music composed for 3-dimensional environments on Unity Gain, a mobile 32-channel High Density Loudspeaker Array (HDLA) designed by the Music and Sonic Arts department at PCC Cascade Campus.

This two-day exhibition will be accompanied by a VR exhibition by Portland Immersive Media Group (PIMG).

Created as a resource for artists and students in our community to publicly experiment with 3-dimensional audio spatialization, Unity Gain allows composers to present work in ways not possible on conventional systems.

“Unity Gain: VOL 1” will be the first showcase of this system. At this event, Unity Gain will be configured as a ring of sound encompassing audiences in Open Signal’s Studio A for two days, within which eight selected regional artists will present an intriguing array of multi-channel audio compositions and performances.

"Sounds et al has collaborated with sonic artist Ben Glas, and visual artist Tyler Snazelle on a new exhibition — Music For An Empty Space and A Full Mind — running during April 2017 at the One Grand Gallery, Portland, OR

The compositions presented in this exhibition are experimental sonic works that question alternate modes of listening and experiencing. Utilizing space and focussing on the individual listener’s interaction, the sounds presented are relativistic to each individual and their movement through spacetime. Simply open your ears and partake in experiential listening. In doing so, the space itself becomes a kind of installation, begging to be ephemerally composed with.

As the listener moves through space, they notice fluctuations of the sound presented. The room itself becomes a score, each movement through space a movement with the music to be discovered. The phenomenon at play here is simply that of acoustic beating and standing waves that lend themselves to be manipulated and played with by one’s personal psychoacoustic and physical mass in space.

The sculptural works act as interpreter in a conversation between light, color and time. Made from various forms of acrylic, the compositions are created using a static electrical charge, a force from an imbalance of electrons between the two materials. Light moves through them at specific times of day producing different ephemeral interactions, creating unique opportunities for dialogue with the viewer. Specifically composed in mind of Glas’ sound pieces the two works hope to weave a personal experience and pathway for every individual that enters the space. You are wind-chime, dancing, playing and echoing in color & sound."

This variation of Inging was one of the first attempts to create a spacetime composition, without a conductor or perceptive composer, other than the individual and their own free will in space. A big nod to La Monte Young's "Drift Study" of 1968,

"Projection of B-Format Signal set waves into Cathedral Park" is a one day installation that focused on a multi-channel, multi-perception approach to composing and space. The project was funded by a grant given by the Precipice Fund (as awarded to CM Wolf (formerly Schneider) and Ben Glas). Over the course of 6 hours the work of 7 artists was projected through 6 speakers, roughly 500 yards apart from each other. The space of installation was sonically negotiable and relative to the landscape of the park itself.
